Local artworker Anon Ymous spoke enthusiastically about the WCX community grant which kick-started the project, and of the 'red-and-white tape' which Roads and Maritime Services worked so diligently to clear so that the Rozelle community's long-held vision for an activist art gallery on Victoria Road could reach fruition. ‘Thanks to the draconian anti-protest legislation enacted 1 July by the Berejiklian government aggrieved local residents are now unable even to congregate without risking onerous fines. Community voices are struggling to be heard, our political and artistic expression is being stifled. That is why we are so delighted that WestConnex has come on board'. But, reveals Ymous, behind the scenes, the road to the Liquorland Gallery has been far from smooth. 'Firstly we needed to to put a strong case to the board of the SMC that WCX's Community Grants Program should not be limited to shut-up money for compliant inner-west primary schools (Birchgrove, Nicholson St, Orange Grove) and beloved local football teams (Tigers, GWS Giants), and that, as in ancient Greece, state support should span the panoply of human endeavour – from sport to art.' The Liquorland Gallery (cnr Springside St & Victoria Rd, Rozelle) will feature a regularly-changing array of local activist art.
